Esce nel 1992, dopo "When Dream and Day Reunite", disco più gezzo se vogliamo, ma che conteneva pezzi come Ytze Jam o A Fortune In Lies, The Killing Hand (e manteneva in cantiere il Cambio di Stagioni).
Siamo nel periodo post Glam-Speed-Shred Metal, il progressive rinasce anche grazie ai Queensryche, e i Majesty, poi Dream Theater, impazzano e squazzano in questa scena neo progressive. Bene, Images and Words è una summa, un grande calderone, un contenitore in cui sono racchiusi tutti gli stilemi del progressive all'antica e della nuova ondata hard. Tutto ovviamente rielaborato, filtrato e Theaterizzato.
Si comincia con Pull Me Under, brano celeberrimo, un cavallo di battaglia. Per chi sente questo album per la prima volta - lontano dai preconcetti della commercializzazione, del relativamente orecchiabile, dello sputtanato - già qui ci si emoziona. Il riff fatto di chorus e tremolo, la tastiera che ricama la chitarra e la batteria che incornicia... semplicemente da pelle d'oca. Voce di LaBrie impareggiabile (quando ancora poteva premetterselo).
Secondo brano: Another Day, classica ballata. Beh mica tanto classica! Brano evocativo, anche grazie alle splendide parole di Petrucci. E' un brano lento, arpeggiato, tuttavia non manca un pezzo di matrice più rock. Pregevoli sono le takes di sax soprano di Jay Beckenstein (Spyro Gyra, mica l'ultimo arrivato...).
Qui arriva il primo picco: Take the Time. La mia canzone preferita in assoluto. Energica, potente, funk, melodica, aggressiva. In una parola progressive. Una sorta di manifesto programmatico di quella che è la musica del Teatro. Semplicemente fantastica. Segnalo l'assolo di chitarra-tastiera all'unisono. Tecnica e classe si incontrano e danno vita ad un connubio assolutamente irripetibile.
Quarto brano: Surrounded. Secondo me, dopo Take the Time, il più bel brano del disco. Brano geniale. L'intro del pianoforte ci riporta ad atmosfere molto distanti dal genere. Ma ecco la chitarra che scandisce un 9/8 fantastico. Un riff potente e una ritmica ficcante, con quel tempo dispari che non ti aspetti. Proprio questo è l'aspetto che più caratterizza la musica dei Dream Theater. L'alternanza dei tempi dispari al 4/4, sempre al servizio della musica e mai fine a se stesso. Qui il testo, davvero ben fatto, è opera del compianto Kevin Moore.
La quinta traccia è un altro cavallo di battaglia dei DT: Metropolis pt.1 - The Miracle and the Sleeper. Il brano che sarà la base, almeno come trait d'union, a Dance of Eternity. Il brano è lineare nella prima parte, più canonica e semplice. Il testo di Petrucci evoca strani paesaggi e ci parla delle tre danze dell'umanita: la morte, l'inganno, l'amore, la danza dell'eternità. Anche questo è un brano da pelle d'oca. Il preludio alla parte più dura e progressive è lo splendido assolo di Myoung. Dopo è tutto un gioco di unisoni tra chitarre e tastiere, con una splendida ritmica di Portnoy. Potente.
Under a Glass Moon. Riff iniziale che gioca sulle ottave e sull'armonizzazione della tastiera. Brano più metal e potente. Adoro l'assolo di questo brano. E fantastico, mi ricorda molto Steve Vai in alcuni tratti. E' il solito JP a firmare le liriche. E non si smentisce mai, almeno in questo cd.
Wait for Sleep, è quasi una ninna nanna. Piano e voce. Tempo dispari, 5/8, 3/4, 2/4, alternati. Difficile da seguire ad un primo impatto. Tuttavia rimane bellissima e godibile. Dolce. Fondamentalmente un prodotto di Moore, anche se l'interpretazione di LaBrie rimane tra le più belle del disco.
L'ultima grande traccia. Learning to Live. Qui ci si ricorda un po' degli Yes o dei Rush. Brano nella classica struttura progressive. Pregevole il lavoro di tappeto delle tastiere, mai scontate. Le ritmiche sono "naturalmente" sincopate, mai scontate, e sempre appetitose. Dal minuto 8 si riprende il tema di Wait for Sleep. Ma qui è più veloce, incalzante, percussivo. Tutti gli strumenti si affancano, e Petrucci si lancia in un breve classico assolo. Ultima canzone che è quasi un riassunto di ciò che si è sentito prima.
Questo è un cd fondamentalmente imperdibile. Bello dall'inizo alla fine. Voglio sottolineare l'apporto soprattutto compositivo di Kevin Moore. Infatti dopo Images and Words e Awake, sono stati pochi i momenti in cui la band è riuscita a ripetersi a questi livelli.
Voto: non credo che ce ne sia bisogno.

Oh my God!!!!!!!! Questo cd è un vero capolavoro che passerà alla storia come uno dei più bei cd progressive.
Sono extraterrestri capaci di abbinare tecnica e melodia senza alcun problema... lasciate perdere chi vi dice che sono solo tecnica e non sostanza!

Come seconda canzone si ha Another Day - la quale secondo me detiene lo scettro come migliore canzone dell'intero album.
Con questo cd la band americana abbia confermato la sua dominazione nel mondo metal-progressive!!
