Recensire un album che ha segnato praticamente un intero filone, quello prog-metal, non è facile ma ce la metterò tutta.
La band è reduce dalla mezza delusione ottenuta con il disco d'esordio "When Dream And Day Unite"; un disco che pur delineando già in parte le caratteristiche della musica dei Dream Theater non bastò a portare la band al successo che avrebbero poi ottenuto in seguito. Ma per concretizzare il "sogno" basta solo il secondo album. Un successo chiaramente inaspettato, visto che in genere ciò che comincia male, è destinato, secondo molti a proseguire altrettanto male.
Images And Words è indubbiamente il capolavoro del progressive metal: chi vuole farsi un'idea generalizzata di cosa esso sia deve partire proprio da questo disco! Il disco infatti contiene tutte le caratteristiche del genere: tecnica sopraffina, sperimentalismo, brani lunghi e articolati ma anche una forte sensibilità melodica. Decisivo, fra le scelte del gruppo l'allontanamento di Charlie Dominici, vocalist del primo album, che dopo le non convincenti prestazioni dei primi live della band viene sostituito con una voce sicuramente più matura e potente: quella di James LaBrie. Fra tutti i cambi di formazione avuti dalla band, forse quello più decisivo; chissà come sarebbe andata senza tale cambiamento! Avrebbero forse continuato ad essere una band da cantina? O forse da soli collezionisti? Ma ciò non ci interessa, ci interessa solo quello che i Dream Theater sono adesso: una band fra le più seguite al mondo con migliaia e migliaia di fan iscritti nei vari fan club, che fa concerti di tre ore e che purtroppo si prende anche numerose critiche!
Si parte con "Pull Me Under", canzone non eccessivamente complessa, piuttosto lineare, basata sulla potente chitarra di Petrucci, ma che regala alcuni ottimi momenti melodici grazie alle tastiere di Kevin Moore; il finale potrà far venire un colpo all'ascoltatore: il brano si conclude improvvisamente come se la spina fosse stata staccata d'improvviso; a prima vista egli penserà che si tratti di un errore di registrazione e magari penseranno addirittura di riportare il disco indietro al negozio, ma in realtà è proprio così che si conclude il brano.
Ma ecco subito una ballata, elemento che d'ora in poi si presenterà in ogni album della band. È "Another Day", basata prevalentemente sulla linea melodica del piano; da notare anche la presenza di un sassofono, che suona sia nella seconda strofa, sia nel finale; Petrucci si mette in luce, prima del finale, con un buon assolo.
Ma ecco finalmente un vero esempio di tecnica: "Take The Time". Primi tre minuti caratterizzati da frenetiche schitarrate e imponenti ritmiche funky sorrette dal basso di Myung, poi ecco una deliziosa parte strumentale dove chitarra e tastiera si esprimono al massimo delle loro potenzialità, suonando talvolta all'unisono, talvolta separatamente; il finale lo crea Petrucci sfumando con l'ennesimo assolo dopo l'ultimo ritornello.
"Surrounded" comincia lenta, con un bel piano accompagnato dalle tastiere, poi entra Petrucci e il suono delle chitarre si fa sempre più duro, fino ad un punto di massima potenza dopo il quale il brano rallenta di nuovo concludendosi ancora con il piano accompagnato dalle tastiere.
Ed ecco il brano simbolo dell'album, "Metropolis pt. 1" . Simbolo dell'album? No, della loro carriera! Ci troviamo di fronte al classico per eccellenza della band, quello che verrà sempre richiesto dai fan in sede live e la cui mancata esecuzione lascerà inevitabilmente l'amaro in bocca agli uscenti dal palazzetto (fidatevi, è successo anche a me quando andai a vederli al Datch Forum il 29 ottobre scorso). Inizio molto teatrale con tutti gli strumenti che si inseriscono uno alla volta, primi quattro minuti caratterizzati da una melodia solare e lineare... Poi ecco che chitarre e tastiere per quattro minunti circa ne combinano veramente di tutti i colori facendovi letteralmente girare la testa! Poi il ritmo rallenta ed assistiamo ad un finale altrettanto cinematografico.
Sottovalutata, forse ingiustamente, è la numero 6 "Under A Glass Moon". Inizio anch'esso molto cinematografico, degno del miglior film di Spielberg. Senza dubbio il brano più aggressivo dell'album, ma Kevin Moore contribuisce a dare anche a tale brano un aspetto melodico. Nella parte strumentale Petrucci ci regala uno dei suoi assoli più belli. Per rilassarsi un po' è necessaria una bella "Wait For Sleep", ballata breve ma toccante: due minuti e mezzo di piano e voce che portano l'eccellente firma di Kevin Moore.
E per concludere ecco il brano che meglio esalta la vena progressive della band: "Learning To Live", il brano in cui si avvicendano più stili. Inizio aggressivo con ottime melodie di tastiera, poi si rallenta lì dove le tastiere regalano una melodia soffice e toccante; ritmo sempre in crescendo fino a tornare di nuovo aggressivo, per poi rallentare di nuovo e dare spazio prima ad ottime melodie con le tastiere e poi ad una parte più blues segnata da una bellissima chitarra acustica che suona su un sottofondo di tastiere; ritmo che cresce ancora fino a sfociare nell'ultima parte, meno aggressiva e più melodica, con le tastiere protagoniste; da notare anche una ripresa di "Wait For Sleep". Conclusione molto ben curata, prima con il basso, poi con un riff di chitarra che suona fino all'infinito.
Ah, che fatica eh? Concludo dicendo che "Images And Words" è un album difficilissimo da imitare; a mio avviso uno dei migliori album di sempre, non solo di questo genere. Siamo in periodo di saldi e non sapete che vestiti comprarvi? Un consiglio, lasciate stare i vestiti e andatevi a comprare un bel cd: un capolavoro come questo non vi farebbe certo male!

Oh my God!!!!!!!! Questo cd è un vero capolavoro che passerà alla storia come uno dei più bei cd progressive.
Sono extraterrestri capaci di abbinare tecnica e melodia senza alcun problema... lasciate perdere chi vi dice che sono solo tecnica e non sostanza!

Come seconda canzone si ha Another Day - la quale secondo me detiene lo scettro come migliore canzone dell'intero album.
Con questo cd la band americana abbia confermato la sua dominazione nel mondo metal-progressive!!
