E dovevo chiudere il mio cerchio di recensioni sugli studio album dei Dream Theater e mi mancava solo l'ultimo fantastico "Systematic Chaos", altro disco che, a quanto pare abbia preso un'altra sfilza di pesci in faccia che secondo me non meriterebbe, come nessun album dei Dream la meriterebbe. Systematic Chaos lo trovo un disco di ottima fattura, anzi dovrebbe essere considerato il disco che riporta i DT alle loro migliori sonorità, se proprio c'è stata una sbavatura nell'ultimo periodo (e bisogna verificare se veramente c'è stata questa sbavatura!). Se in Octavarium si aveva privilegiato un sound pù melodico e basato su strutture più accessibili qui si torna ad un sound più hard con parti strumentali molto compesse (che tuttavia la band non ha mai abbandonato).
Che i Dream Theater siano tornati davvero alla grande lo si capisce già dall'inizio cno la prima parte della suite "In The Presence Of Enemies" che comincia con una pregevole parte strumentale che mette Petrucci e Rudess davvero in evidenza (notevole l'assolo di Petrucci) per poi sfociare in una parte più regolare con le chitarre distorte in primo piano e le tastiere ad accompagnare la voce di LaBrie. Dopo l'unisono finale chitarra-tastiera, il fruscio di vento sta a farci capire che la storia proseguirà con l'ultima track. Per il momento ci conduce ad una piacevole "Forsaken" basata su una struttura strofa-ritornello abbastanza elementare e da una melodia che si rifà al gothic metal e agli Evanescence grazie alle note di piano e al sottofondo delle tastiere. "Constant Motion " ci introduce nella parte più heavy dell'album: un brano con inflessioni thrash, e con un Petrucci molto tecnico, soprattutto all'inizio (belli i giri iniziali); nel ritornello le tastiere danno un tocco melodico; la parte strumentale ci riserva un gran solo di Petrucci e un niente male solo di Rudess. E cosa dire di "The Dark Eternal Night"? Quasi una nuova Metropolis se avesse solo un po' di teatralità in più; forse il brano che meglio rispetta le strutture tipiche delle canzoni dei Dream Theater. Brano estremo e pesante coronato da una lunga parte strumentale che fra complessi giri di chitarra e tastiera e musiche in stile horror e commedy si rivela davvero un capolavoro! Bello anche il finale dove le pesanti chitarre di Petrucci sono accompagnate dal continuum di Jordan Rudess. "Repantance" (4^ parte della saga "alcolisti anonimi") al di là di chi ne parla come un brano spento in realtà è un'autentica genialata: nessuno, dopo aver letto i 10:43 di durata avrebbe pensato ad un pezzo interamente lento e invece... ecco che si tratta di un brano estremamente psichedelico con chitarre malinconiche sorrette dal piano e qualche sottofondo di tastiera (evidenti i riferimenti a Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Opeth). Bello l'assolo centrale, poi dopo la serie di voci che anticipano l'ultima parte ci caliamo proprio nella parte finale dove piano e chitarra acustica guidano i cori. Tutto molto bello ma ora si passa ad una più immediata, "Prophets Of War": bello l'inizio con il synth di Jordan Rudess poi il brano procede con chitarre potenti e una melodia solare ed efficace. "The Ministry Of Lost Souls" è un altro brano piuttosto atipico per la band: 14 minuti in cui però prevale la melodia: primi 7 minuti malinconici, orchestrali, con piacevoli parti di piano e di chitarra acustica ma passati i 7 minuti entriamo in un'ottima parte strumentale dove il sound si fa più hard e assistiamo ai soliti e complessi virtuosismi di chitarra e tastiera per poi tornare, verso gli 11 minuti ad una melodia più soft che si conclude con un lungo e armonioso assolo... Il fruscio di vento ci conduce alla seconda parte di "In The Presence Of Enemies": inizio lento e suggestivo, melodia che cresce fino al sesto minuto per poi dare spazio a riff aggressivi e agli stessi cori sentiti in "Prophets Of War" e sfociare, verso al nono, all'ennesima lunga parte strumentale sul tipico stile Dream; un finale teatrale e suggestivo (con le tastiere decisive) chiude un vero capolavoro.
Magari leggermente un gradino sotto le pietre militari che il gruppo ha regalato negli anni '90 ma penso che questo disco meriti davvero queste benedette 5 stelle!

Questo disco rappresenta tutte quelle cose che sono fondamentalmente sbagliate nel genre prog-metal.
Systematic Chaos è uno dei lavori meno validi mai fatti in ambito metal.

Il gruppo non fa altro che modificare leggermente i brani già scritti in passato.
Questo album è già un forte segnale di questo fatto, perciò siate onesti, non gridate al capolavoro.

Sorprendente
Questa canzone si articola tendenzialmente in due parti, la prima più lenta e struggente mentre la seconda più incalzante e tecnicamente eccellente.

Il Teatro Dei Sogni rappresenta il non plus ultra della mediocrità e della totale nullità artistica fatta Rock.
Un vero e proprio 'systematic chaos' insomma.
