Dopo più di vent'anni di carriera, con 8 album in studio, numerosissimi fan ed altrettanti detrattori, i Dream Theater, Prog metal band per eccellenza, sfornano il 9 capitolo della loro saga, intitolato "Systematic Chaos", il primo disco dopo la firma per la casa discografica Roadrunner Records.
Il disco si apre con la prima parte della lunga suite "In The Presence Of Enemies", con un potente ed incisivo intro strumentale che già fa intuire molto a riguardo delle nuove suonorità adottate e trattate nel nuovo album. La canzone si sviluppa in 2 parti per la prima sezione e in 4 per la seconda per un totale di sei. La canzone viene divisa in due parti per un semplice motivo: bisognava far capire che l'album non era collegato in alcun modo al precedente(cosa che è accaduta spesso nelle loro produzioni) e che non si trattava di un concept album. Per la prima ragione la traccia non poteva essere posta alla fine, perchè sarebbe risultato uguale ad "Octavarium", e per la seconda non poteva essere messa come traccia iniziale (avrebbe rimandato a produzioni come "2112" dei "Rush") perciò si ritenne opportuno tagliarla. Unendole però si trova una composizione di più di 25 minuti, che costituisce un nuovo record per la band. Nel testo si parla di un uomo che, vendendo parte della sua anima al diavolo prima della morte, entra nelle sue schiere e deve combattere per lui. Alla fine si ha la sua redenzione tramite un salvatore, probabilemente identificabile con gesù. Molto ben elaborati ed azzeccati alcuni passaggi (soprattutto nella seconda parte, fantastico il refrain della 3 parte sul signore oscuro) da rivedere altre.
Segue "Forsaken" aperto da un ottimo intro di piano, che non riesce però a risollevare le sorti dell'intera traccia. L'assolo, nonostante sia molto ben elaborato, non riesce bene all'interno della composizione, mentre si ha un discreto ritornello, che spesso fa tornare in mente alcune canzoni all'interno di "Octavarium". Come terza traccia possiamo trovare "Constant Motion", buona canzone, con molti riferimenti alle sonorità tipiche dei migliori Metallica, rielaborate in chiave prog dai Dream Theater. La parte strumentale è molto ben eseguita e questa volta Petrucci e Rudess riescono a dare del loro meglio imprimendo una decisiva svolta alla traccia. Della canzone è stato tratto anche un video che taglia però parte della completezza di tali evoluzioni.
Si passa dopo alla traccia più Potente e Dark dell'intero album, si tratta di "The Dark Eternal Night" in cui la voce di Labrie viene supportata da quella di Portnoy pesantemente "sporcata". Per aumentare tale sonorità Petrucci fa uso di una chitarra 7 corde, con la quale apre il brano, seguito dal resto della band. Si può notare come la tastiera nel primo tratto risulti molto di secondo piano, mentre Myung usi una tecnica atipica per questo brano e Portnoy completi il tutto con un ampio uso del doppio pedale, per dare tipiche sonorità metal. Ottima la digressione strumentale dove Il folle Rudess aggiunge una parte in ragtime di solo piano che rimanda alla stupenda "Dance of Eternity". Anche se non eseguito con la stessa maestria riesce a spezzare il turbinio potente e oscuro creato dagli altri tre strumentisti.
Segue "Repetance" (tra l'altro unico riferimento ad altri album) in cui vengono narrati le parti 8 e 9 della saga sugli alcolisti anonimi (che alla fine dovrebbero risultare 12, in modo speculare ai 12 passi). Il brano è molto calmo e si può notare come chiuda la prima parte dell'album, caratterizzata da un suono più pesante e metal, a favore della seconda, con nuove sonorità e più tranquillità. Interessante la parte conclusiva di parlato sovrapposto nel quale partecipano nomi famosi del panorama musicale quali Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Stephen Wilson e Chris Jerico, per citarne alcuni. Troviamo poi "Prophets of war"in cui i 5 Newyorkesi si trasformano nei 3 Muse, elaborando le sonorità sperimentate dal gruppo inglese in chiavi più prog. Si può infatti notare tale somiglianza dall'intro voce e sinth, dalla tecnica vocale usata (molto vibrato su note medio-alte), e da quella chitarristica (ampio uso di accordi di 5). Interessante notare come il ritornello non sia cantato da nessuno dei membri della band ma bensì dai fan (penso che sarà davvero una bella esperienza sentire e cantare tale pezzo dal vivo), radunati negli studio di newyork (i più temerari hanno aspettato in fila per ben 7 ore per essere ammessi).
Arriviamo tra alti e bassi alla settima traccia dell'album intitolata "The ministry Of Lost Souls" in cui si parla di una donna, salvata dall'affogamento da un uomo, che però da la sua vita per questo gesto nobile (fantastico il testo e le figure usate). Il rimorso l'attanaglia e non riesce a vivere serenamente. La canzone rimanda a sonorità tipiche di Pink Floyd, sempre riadattate e rielaborate, con il risultato di una ballata veramente ben costruita, a tratti commovente e trascinante, in cui la semplicità e la bellezza delle parti melodiche, si fondono con un fantastico LaBrie che riesce a modulare la sua voce rendendola molto soft e pienamente adatta al brano. Si apre poi una vasta sezione strumentale che porta verso l'apoteosi finale la canzone che si conclude con un alito di vento, che spazza via le lacrime prima del pezzo finale. Una delle migliori tracce dell'album.
Si ritorna su "In the presence Of Enemies", ma con la seconda parte. Se "The ministry Of Lost Souls" vi aveva scaldato, i lugubri ed appena accennati riff di chitarra e tastiera mettono davvero i brividi. LaBrie canta alla perfezione il pezzo iniziale, che si evolve e aumenta di intensità (come già dicevo è veramente azzeccato il ritornello di questa prima sezione della traccia), fino ad esplodere nella seconda(quarta per l'interno) sezione dove urli di guerra lasciano il posto ad un potente testo ed a un altrettanto potente cantante, che riesce a far turbinare il brano fino ad una nuova parte strumentale. Si arriva quindi alla conclusione (non male ma di gran lunga meno bella di quella di "Six Degrees of Inner turbolence") e alla chiusura definitiva. Carina la trovata di posticipare le ultime note dopo un breve silenzio.
In sostanza "Systematic Chaos" è un buon album dei padri del prog metal, non è sicuramente a livello della produzione dei primi anni 90' ma si difende benissimo anche questa, sempre considerando l'alto standard che viene sempre mantenuto dai Dream Theater.

Questo disco rappresenta tutte quelle cose che sono fondamentalmente sbagliate nel genre prog-metal.
Systematic Chaos è uno dei lavori meno validi mai fatti in ambito metal.

Il gruppo non fa altro che modificare leggermente i brani già scritti in passato.
Questo album è già un forte segnale di questo fatto, perciò siate onesti, non gridate al capolavoro.

Sorprendente
Questa canzone si articola tendenzialmente in due parti, la prima più lenta e struggente mentre la seconda più incalzante e tecnicamente eccellente.

Il Teatro Dei Sogni rappresenta il non plus ultra della mediocrità e della totale nullità artistica fatta Rock.
Un vero e proprio 'systematic chaos' insomma.
