Quando i critici di tutto il mondo affermarono la bellezza e la raffinatezza del nuovo album di Madonna, tutti ne rimasero a bocca aperta.
La sua musica era cambiata, i suoi testi maturati ed era diventata mamma.
Fino ad oggi rimane il suo album più maturo.
Fu una sorpresa... molti artisti stranieri quando cercano di maturare fanno si che loro musica spesso cada nel ridicolo prima di quanto si pensi. Ma quando ascoltai per la prima volta "Ray of Light", questo presentimento svanì. Comprai immediatamente l'album e lo ascoltai fino a consumarlo. Tutt'ora è infatti uno dei migliori album pop della storia, considerato da
-VH1, tra i 10 migliori album della storia.
-Rolling Stones, tra i 500 migliori album di sempre.
Ray of Light ha venduto, fino ad ora, a livello mondiale, 17 milioni di copie.

In quest'album ascoltiamo Madonna dopo l'interpretazione del musical "Evita". E ciò si nota.
Madonna canta in un modo straordinario. Le canzoni non seguono un filo logico all'interno dell'album; ma tutte risultano all'avanguardia anche 11 anni dopo l'uscita del cd. Ci sono delle grandi melodie, su tutte: Frozen, Ray of Light, Skin, Sky Fits Heaven.

I testi dell'album sono un grande passo avanti. Si parla di spiritualità, di vita, di maternità, del successo e dell'amore. All'interno di esso vi è inoltre una canzone in sanscrito, Shanti/Ashtangi, la quale traduzione è riportata qui sotto:

La Techno è un mondo per rilassarsi, non un qualcosa che serve ad "esplodere" come noi dell'occidente pensiamo. Ritmi trance si mescolano a beat disco, mentre le percussioni rendono l'atmosfera del disco calma e ipnotica. Il meglio dell'album lo si trova soprattutto in Frozen, Nothing Really Matters e Skin.
Mer Girl.
La prima volta che ascoltai Mer Girl rimasi un po' sconcertato. La mano di Orbit si sente più forte che mai in questa canzone, dove ritmi ambient fanno da sottofondo ad una voce sofferta e angosciosa. Leggendo poi la traduzione del testo immaginai che la composizione fosse nata in partenza come poesia...
