Anno 1983, Los Angeles, California.
Ispirati da Kiss, Alice Cooper, New York Dolls e Mott The Hopple, quattro ragazzacci di L.A. avevano già dato alle stampe due anni prima l'ottimo debutto "Too Fast For Love", caratterizzato da un Glam/Hard Rock venato di un certo Punk. Per la loro seconda uscita i Crue decisero però di spingere sull'accelleratore inspessendo il sound ed eliminando totalmente i richiami al Glam Rock anni 70 in favore di una maggiore influenza da parte della NWOBHM dando così alla luce quello che, a mio avviso, si rivelerà non solo il loro lavoro più riuscito ma anche un album seminale per la nascente scena Hair/Glam Metal Americana, "Shout At The Devil".
Ma veniamo ora all'analisi dell'album brano per brano:
Si parte con "In The Beginning" che in pratica non è altro che un'introduzione parlata (e di buon effetto) alla title-track che parte con il cadenzato ed aggressivo riff di chitarra di Mick Mars, che viene poi spezzato dal vocalist Vince Neil con un acuto dando poi il via alla strofa quindi al coinvolgente coro del ritornello che rende al massimo nei live e non può non entrare in testa all'ascoltatore già al primo ascolto; dopo quest'ottima apertura si prosegue sempre su alti livelli con "Looks That Kill" che è anche il primo singolo estratto dall'album, riff ripetitivo, quasi ipnotico e ritornello "a presa rapida" mantengono il disco in un'atmosfera abbastanza oscura e allo stesso tempo molto catchy. Il quarto brano è "Bastard" brano appena sotto il livello dei precedenti ma comunque di ottima fattura e molto aggressivo in cui il drumming di Tommy Lee la fa da padrone.
Dopo i primi tre carichissimi pezzi si tira un po il fiato con lo strumentale "God Bless The Children Of The Beast" composto da Mars ispirandosi a "Diamond Dogs" di Bowie.
Giusto il tempo di una pausa per poi rituffarsi nell'Hard N' Heavy più sfrenato con l'incendiaria cover di "Helter Skelter" dei Beatles che i Motley reinterpretano alla grande rendendola praticamente loro. Il settimo brano è il più veloce del disco e anche uno dei miei preferiti, "Red Hot" il drumming di Lee è incalzante sin dall'inizio e non molla mai per tutta la canzone in cui si nota l'influenza della NWOBHM. Segue un'altro brano di spicco "Too Young To Fall In Love" con il suo irresistibile ritornello.
Il brano numero nove è "Knock 'em Dead, Kid!" nel cui testo il bassista Nikki Sixx scaglia la sua rabbia contro le forze dell'ordine Losangeline, si tratta di un brano minore ma comunque di ottima fattura. La penultima traccia è forse quella che convince di meno, il brano, intitolato "Ten Seconds To Love" non riesce a decollare e risulta alla lunga noiso. A concludere troviamo l'ottima semi-ballad "Danger" che sta su ritmi blandi e rilassati nelle strofe per poi crescere nel ritornello.
Si chiude così uno dei capitoli migliori della storia dei Motley Crue (che in futuro non riusciranno a bissare questo lavoro e il suo predecessore) e del Glam metal in generale.

Le quattro dannate puttane tornano sugli scaffali con un adrenalinico album di grandissimo hard rock quale è, e sarà, Shout at the Devil.
Un album che ormai è un classico a pieno merito, la band da qui in poi diverrà oggetto di paragone per chiunque voglia cimentarsi con l'hard rock ed il glam.

Fanno Punk Metal con un po' di Glam i Motley, qualcosa che nessuno aveva mai fatto prima.
La produzione molto più curata canalizza la rabbia verso lidi più commerciali.
