Ad un primo ascolto superficiale verrebbe quasi voglia di ribattezzarlo “a night at the disco” questo quarto lavoro in studio dei Muse. Ciononostante neppure la storpiatura di un famoso album dei Queen, band molto amata dal frontman Matthew Bellamy, basterebbe a cogliere l’eterogeneità che anima e contraddistingue Black Holes And Revelations dai suoi predecessori.
Il crescendo techno dell’iniziale "Take A Bow", così come il groove quasi parodistico di "Supermassive Black Hole" spiazzeranno più di un fan del trio inglese. La quarta traccia "Map Of The Problematique" è il primo centro pieno di Black Holes And Revelations grazie ad una perfetta commistione tra elettronica e rock: l’incedere nervoso della batteria ben si amalgama infatti con l’imponente “wall of sound” di tastiera e chitarra ai quali ci ha abituato Bellamy. L’attimo di quiete assicuratoci con l’innocua parentesi acustica di Soldier’s Poem allenta fin troppo la tensione, soprattutto a causa della successiva (e soporifera) Invincible che non vince e non convince affatto, a dispetto del titolo e del finale gratuitamente rumoroso e confusionario. Il riff principale di "Assassin", tipico brano convulso à la Muse, sembra un palese quanto ironico omaggio alla sigla del telefilm Supercar. La conclusiva "Knights Of Cydonia" è un compendio schizofrenico dei gusti musicali di Bellamy: all’incipit spaghetti western segue un coro con annessa esplosione di chitarre degno dei Queen di Bohemian Rhapsody.
Black Holes And Revelations costerà forse ai Muse la perdita di qualche fan ma quando si rischia veramente a livello artistico, come in questo caso, si ha l’impressione che il gioco valga la candela.
