Nel 1994, dopo varie esibizioni live nei pub della loro città,ed alcuni demo registrati amatorialmente, gli Oasis esordiscono con il loro primo vero e proprio album da studio, "Definitely Maybe", frutto dello spirito rock e dell'atteggiamento britannico che anima i componenti della band mancuniana.
La canzone che apre il via alle danze si intitola "Rock'n'Roll Star", traccia energica e rockeggiante, dove spicca la voglia di Noel, autore di tutte le perle del disco, di voler fuggire dalla città e diventare una stella del firmamento del rock (cosa che accadrà solamente un anno dopo). La traccia che segue è "Shakermaker", allegra ballad che non toglie nulla all'album, anzi, forse aggiunge grazie alle splendide prestazioni vocali che Liam esprime al massimo (in quest'opera Ourkid canta tutte le canzoni, a differenza degli album successivi nei quali prenderà parte del cantato anche Noel).
Eccoci al capolavoro, "Live Forever", splendida, meravigliosa, instancabile.. ma che senso ha elencare tutti questi aggettivi? Questa "meraviglia", pubblicata nell'estate del medesimo anno dell'uscita dell'album, è il primo grande capolavoro del gruppo, una canzone dedicata alla madre di Noel (e quindi anche di Liam), la quale tende a sottolineare la volontà di non voler morire, ma di voler volare e quindi vivere (nelle esibizioni live tra il '95 e il '00, durante la riproduzione di questa canzone, sugli schermi venivano proiettate le immagini di alcuni "grandi della musica", con come foto finale John Lennon, come omaggio al grande artista tragicamente scomparso nell'80). "Up In The Sky" e "Columbia" fanno un po' di riferimento a "Shakermaker",ovvero non tolgono ne aggiungono nulla di particolare al prodotto. Con "Supersonic" invece, primo singolo del gruppo, si torna su ben distinti livelli, la traccia in questione è forse una delle migliori dell'album, dove riusciamo a riconoscere chiaramente una certa somiglianza con lo stile degli Stone Roses.
Dopo aver ascoltato con un po' di riluttanza "Bring It Down", unico scarto dell'album, riconosciamo chiaramente il riff di chittara di "Bang A Gong Get It On", dei T-Rex, spudoratamente rubato da Noel per "Cigarettes&Alcohol". Tuttavia, il plagio commesso da The Chief, è passabile e passabile, esso non toglie nessun punto alla canzone in questione, mitico capolavoro che elogia le sigarette e l'utilizzo delle droghe, come lo dimostra il video girato in una discoteca di Londra, con ben 500 persone ad assistere. Ovviamente, come in tutte le altre traccie, si riesce a percepire quel rock duro e grezzo, che nei lavori successivi non si troverà molto facilmente (in questo album vengono usate solamente chitarre elettriche).
Dopo una simpatica e vivace "Digsy Diner", arriviamo al singolo da me prediletto, "Slide Away". Romantica, passionale, sincera, sembra quasi di descrivere una ragazza, ma invece si sta parlando di una canzone, una grande canzone, nella quale, sebbene sia presente una certa dolcezza all'interno dei testi, il sound è sempre molto rock, cosa che però non rende certo la traccia da meno, anzi. "Let me be the one,who shines with you,and we can slide away".. che lo vogliate o no, questa è poesia, e non riuscirò mai a capire perché voi condannate la poesia. L'album si conclude con "Married With Childre", questa volta una canzone calma e rilassante, che lascia l'ascoltatore con un saluto: "Good bye i'm going home".
Si conclude così un grande album, un album che in qualche modo, e lo vogliate o no, ha risvegliato la musica britannica assopita in quei tempi, e ha comunque donato una certa bellezza nel mondo del rock.
Mi domando perché voi condanniate questa band, me lo chiederò sempre essendo giovane ed inesperto nel campo della musica. Forse perché sono arroganti? Forse perché si proclamano la band più brava al mondo? Effettivamente non sono da scartare le vostre motivazioni, ma chi ha fatto meglio di loro in quegli anni? Chi ha saputo esprimere al meglio i bisogni e i sentimenti del popolo britannico? Voglio i nomi! Voglio sapere chi ha fatto meglio di loro nel campo del rock in quell'anno.

Noel Gallagher ci aveva avvertito, gli Oasis non sono innovatori, vogliono solo colpirti con canzoni semplici che sono instant classic.
Live Forever è un vero inno alla vita, per chi cerca di realizzare qualcosa di eccezionale e vivere così per sempre.

Sì, è ascoltabile, ma non è certo un cd “intramontabile” o un “capolavoro” come ho sentito dire da alcuni.
Se un album non piace, bisogna scartarlo e dedicarsi ad un altro, mi sembra inutile insistere!

La prima canzone è "Rock'N'Roll Star", pezzo storico degli Oasis, che porta una gran bella scarica di adrenalina.
Un'altra canzone aggressiva è "Cigarettes & Alcohol", strapiena di riferimenti alla droga, ma da ascoltare comunque tranquillamente.

Live Forever: una gran canzone che divenne il vero e proprio inno di una generazione.
Se la prima si perde in accordi un po’ troppo azzardati, la seconda annoia con la sua eccessiva mielosità.
