C'è poco da fare, quando ascolti un album come questo Hittin' the Note della rinata e rinnovata Allman Brothers Band sembra che tutto il resto sia robetta di poco conto, di facile e banale ascolto, in pratica la classica musica "usa e getta".
Ovviamente sto estremizzando ed enfatizzando il concetto anche e soprattutto condizionato dai miei gusti musicali, ma non siamo poi troppo lontani dalla realtà.
Hittin' the Note segna il grandissimo e convincente ritorno della ABB dopo nove anni dall'ultima produzione e dopo un periodo davvero travagliato concluso col traumatico abbandono da parte di Dickey Betts, uno dei fondatori della band e personaggio mitico del mondo Southern.
Per molti l'abbandono di Betts poteva segnare il definitivo stop della band ma l'arrivo di personaggi come Warren Haynes e Dereck Trucks ha dato nuova linfa e creatività e il primo risultato di questa rinnovata lineup è proprio questo album semplicemente stupendo, un lavoro che non teme confronti con gli album degli esordi e che ci ripropone un Gregg Allman in eccellente forma con una prestazione vocale a livelli strepitosi.
Gli 11 pezzi di questo lavoro sono di una qualità straordinaria, con punte d'eccellenza nella opener Firing Line dove troviamo subito l'impronta graffiante della chitarra di Haynes, Desdemona che ci riporta sulle malinconiche atmosfere di Melissa e un Gregg Allman ispirato con non mai, Rockin Horse semplicemente perfetta tra chitarre infuocate e una ritmica di basso e percussioni travolgente, così come nella strumentale Instrumental Illness dove il ritmo si fa quasi tribale e ci trasporta in atmosfere jazz/blues molto vicine ai capolavori ascoltati sul celeberrimo Live at Fillmore East.
La conclusiva Old Friend non necessita di commenti, è semplicemente da brividi per chi ama il blues più viscerale e vicino alle origini.
In sostanza un disco che potremmo tranquillamente definire perfetto, con Gregg Allman in forma come ai tempi d'oro, chitarre travolgenti e in perfetta sintonia tra la selvaggia irruenza rock blues di Warren Haynes e la delicatezza cristallina e quasi impercettibile di Dreck Trucks, un reparto ritmico trascinante e coinvolgente e una qualità musicale d'insieme da lasciare davvero senza parole.
In una parola : capolavoro!
