Conosciuto ai più per essere il chitarrista, nonché il leader storico, dei Black Sabbath, uno dei più influenti gruppi della storia del rock e non, il leggendario Tony Iommi pubblica nel 2005 il suo terzo lavoro da solista dal titolo "Fused", dopo l'omonimo "Iommi" del 2000 e "1996 Dep Session" del 2004 (quest'ultimo inciso prima di "iommi" ma, a seguito della reunion dei Sabbath con Ozzy, pubblicato solo nel 2004). In realtà, se si considera "Seventh Star" del 1986 un disco solista di Iommi, "Fused" è da considerarsi il quarto disco.
E' un album particolarmente riuscito in cui il grande Tony (nessun aggettivo gli renderebbe mai giustizia) si cimenta anche con stili differenti da quanto da lui proposto con i Sabbath: troviamo brani più hard rock, altri decisamente heavy metal, poi ancora, grunge, stoner, Nu,ecc.
La formazione che registra questo disco vede accanto a Iommi, Gleen Hughes alla voce (alla corte di Tony già dal 1986 con "Seventh Star"), Bob Marlette al basso nonché coproduttore con Iommi, Kenny Aronoff alla batteria.
Nel disco sono presenti 10 tracce più tre bonus presenti in altre pubblicazioni ("let It Down easy" presente nella versione giapponese).
Apre il disco "Dopamine", uno dei brani, stilisticamente, più moderni di questo disco; si tratta di un di un hard blues in versione (vagamente) NU Metal con forti echi zeppeliniani che rimandano a quel gioiello che è "Physical Graffiti". E' incredibile come la voce di Hughes si adatti tranquillamente a qualsivoglia genere musicale.
Più Sabbathiano il successivo "Wasted Again", un heavy rock decisamente corposo con uno Hughes in gran spolvero, grandissimo nel passare da una tonalità all'altra.
Si ritorna a sonorità più moderne con la successiva "Saviour Of The Real", in cui la chitarra di Iommi accarezza a tratti sonorità care ai Corrosion Of Conformity.
Sonorità più vicine al sound di Seattle (Soundgarden in primis) si possono cogliere invece nella successiva "Resolution Song": brano nel complesso discreto ma un po' troppo pachidermico però.
E' ancora il NU metal a farla da padrone nella successiva "Grace", anch'esso caratterizzato da un terremotante riff di Iommi. Nel brano, verso il finale,trova posto una delle tipiche progressioni ritmiche, tanto care al Sabba Nero! Il brano è un capolavoro, forse il migliore insieme all'opener e a "I Go Insane".
Un arpeggio introduce la successiva cadenzata "Deep Inside A Sheel", un brano tutto sommato buono ma non all'altezza di altri. "What You're Living For" un brano che alterna parti ritmiche tipicamente NWOBHM ad altre decisamente cadenzate; bello lo stacco centrale in cui Iommi tira fuori il suo tagliente assolo!
"Face You Fear" torna su lidi decisamente plumbei e pesanti cari al NU e a certo stoner rock; superbo Hughes (a tratti irriconoscibile!). Iommi è come sempre superlativo! Difficile trovare un musicista che, a sessant'anni e più, tiri fuori dei riff così cattivi e allucinati.
Estremamente cupa anche la successiva "The Spell" ma è l'ultimo pezzo che da solo merita l'acquisto del disco. "I Go Insane" è il capolavoro del disco, una doom ballad letteralmente splendida, che coniuga in se i migliori Sabbath con atmosfere pinkfloydiane ("Confortably Numb"), parti acustiche e molto altro ancora.
Per concludere segnalerei "Let It Down Easy", un hard granitico stile Montrose, presente nella versione giapponese del disco.
Credo sia inutile aggiungere altro: siamo di fronte al miglior disco di hard & heavy del 2005; se Iommi non avesse perso il suo tempo con l'inutile reunion dei Sabbath con Ozzy avrebbe sicuramente potuto regalarci molti altri dischi di questa fattura.
