Il pomo della discordia. L'album della maturità per alcuni, l'inizio della fine per altri. Fatto sta che, questa volta, i Metallica decidono di fare le cose in grande ed affidano le sorti del loro quinto pargolo a quella macchina d'album di platino che risponde al nome di Bob Rock.
Il cosiddetto "Black Album" (per via della copertina completamente nera) vede la luce nel 1991 e, se da un lato renderà onore e fama al four - piece statunitense rendendolo "schifosamente" ricco, dall'altro porterà loro, soprattutto, una valanga di critiche. Critiche dirette ad accusare il quartetto di essersi venduto e commercializzato. In effetti l'album soffre della mancanza di quella complessità delle canzoni che era diventato il marchio di fabbrica dei Metallica, lasciando spazio ad una forma più easy-listening delle stesse. Brani come "Wherever I May Roam", "Don't Tread On Me" e, soprattutto, "Enter Sandman" (costituiti da un unico riff) dall'accattivante (ruffiano!) refrain conquistano subito i cuori delle masse, avvicinando al gruppo folle oceaniche di nuovi fans, entusiasti del nuovo corso intrapreso dalla band. Anche la voce di Hetfield cambia, passando dallo stilema "cattivo e incazzato" a quello più diretto e "rockeggiante".
L'album, lungo la sua durata, alterna i suoi momenti alti e bassi. Tuttavia i Metallica, quando vogliono, dimostrano ancora di saper graffiare, sfornando delle ottime metal songs, quali "The Struggle Within", la bellissima "Of Wolf And Man" , la sabbathiana "Sad But True" e, la sottovalutata, "Through The Never". Tuttavia, se è vero che l'album è molto più commerciale (Dio, quanto odio questa parola!) rispetto ai suoi quattro fratelli maggiori, è anche vero che non è possibile rimanere indifferenti innanzi a tutte le succitate songs (dal parer mio, bellissime) e, soprattutto, al cospetto delle due ballad, "The Unforgiven", oscura ed affascinante all'inverosimile, e "Nothing Else Matters", cui unica colpa potrà esser solo quella di aver infranto i cuori di ogni metallaro, anche il più cattivo.
"The Black Album": non il migliore, non il più ispirato dei dischi dei Metallica, è vero. Comunque rimane un disco che conserva la sua dignità e il suo fascino, anche se, da questo momento, le cose per la band inizieranno a prendere una brutta piega...

Metallica rappresentano la merda metal in senso assoluto.
La canzone "Enter Sandman" è la più merda in senso assoluto e tout court limitatamente al metal.

Come si può dimenticare poi il capolavoro dell'album, "Nothing Else Matters", una tra le ballads migliori del gruppo.
Il "Black Album" è un buon lavoro, utile anche per avvicinare la gente a questa straordinaria band e magari per prepararli a cose un po più impegnate.

Ecco, sta arrivando l'uomo della sabbia (sandman), mi sta rendendo schiavo di questa musica.
Più o meno perché dopo circa due-tre minuti arriva l'assolo di chitarra, devastante, così bello e puro che ti fa pensare che sei inutile, che non hai mai fatto niente in vita tua e che però sei perdonato con questo nobile ascolto.
